Can you bleach with braces?
The aspects described only refer to a bleaching treatment at the dentist. The Sugarsmile products are a gentler but still effective alternative and can be used without much attention.
Bleaching with braces - possible, but does it make sense?
Although it is theoretically possible to have teeth whitened at the dentist while wearing braces, it is not recommended. The bleaching agent cannot reach the areas covered by the braces and the result would be very uneven. However, this mainly applies to bleaching treatments at the dentist. Sugarsmile bleaching products are a gentler alternative and can be used without any problems even when wearing braces.
Bleaching after removing the braces
After the braces have been removed, whitening at the dentist may be worth considering. The reason for this is that discoloration caused by wires, brackets and rubber bands is now particularly visible because the braces are no longer in place. This discoloration occurs due to the different mineralization of the tooth enamel where the braces rest compared to other parts of the tooth. Many people want to have these discolorations removed as soon as possible after the braces have been removed, although the color differences can even out on their own over time. Bleaching is one way to whiten the teeth.
What should be taken into account when bleaching?
After braces are removed, whitening may be considered, as the stains caused by the brackets are now most visible. However, patients should be patient and wait up to two months before undergoing whitening. The brackets have affected the tooth enamel, and it is important that it repairs somewhat before whitening takes place. The decision as to when to perform whitening is up to the dentist, and it is advisable to trust their expertise rather than rushing into home whitening. The retainer that is sometimes fitted after braces does not interfere with whitening, but can be temporarily removed. Before whitening, the dentist will also check the teeth and gums for any conditions that could affect whitening.
Bleaching with removable braces
If the dentist recommends wearing removable braces, bleaching would theoretically be possible during treatment. However, most dentists warn against this, as new discoloration can occur every time the braces are worn. However, the question of bleaching with braces usually only arises for older patients, as bleaching is generally not necessary for young people. Older patients, on the other hand, often receive fixed braces to treat misaligned teeth where bleaching is not possible (see above).
